The Powder Blue Tuxedo Boys in Morocco

Blind Man and Monkey

The PBTB in Morocco, June 17th, 2025

It’s a beautiful afternoon in Los Angeles. Some acrid smoke hangs in the air from the recent riots, but inside the Frolic Room on Hollywood Boulevard, the Powder Blue Tuxedo Boys are drinking Beck’s Beers in their booth by the jukebox. “Hey, Hey, We’re the Monkees” is playing.

Eddie bring over two more Beck’s to the booth.

Eddie: What the hell is that?

Patrick: That’s our monkey candelabra from Morocco.

Timothy: It’s a long story.

Eddie pulls up a chair and sits on it back to front at the end of the booth.

Eddie: I got time.

Timothy: It was the summer of 1970.

Patrick: We’d just graduated from high school and wanted to see the world.

Timothy: We heard that Crosby, Stills, & Nash song about Marrakesh, Morocco and decided to go there.

Patrick: We’d saved up our money from the Cosmic Cow bead business we had.

Timothy: So we land in Marrakesh and make our way to the Casbah.

Patrick: We wanted to see the real Morocco.
Timothy: And there was this blind beggar with a monkey collecting coins.

Patrick: We gave him some money.

Timothy: We liked the monkey.

Patrick: The blind man told us to go down an alley to a red door and knock.

Timothy: He told us to say, “mudarrib ar-raqs”.

Patrick: We had no idea what it meant, but the red door opened in the castle wall, and we were in.

Timothy: We were led to a large room full of beautiful young women.

Patrick: We said, “mudarrib ar-raqs” and the girls began to smile and giggle.

Timothy: They started dancing with us, or trying to.

Patrick: We figured out that they thought we were dance instructors.

Eddie: You clowns don’t know how to dance the Texas two-step.

Timothy: We faked it by imitating the dancing in West Side Story.

Patrick: After an hour or so, the girls brought out a hookah, some hash, and fruits and nuts. We had a party.

Timothy: The hash must have been strong. We passed out.
Patrick: And woke up naked and a bit gooey.

Timothy: There was a commotion at the big door to the room. It was the king who came to pick a few girls for his evening bedtime story.

Patrick: We had to move fast. We grabbed some harem girl clothes, including the veils, and tried to hide in the back of the room.

Timothy: But the king took a liking to us and started to lead us away.

Patrick: That’s when I saw the monkey with the fez, candelabra. I brained the king with it.

Timothy: We ran out through the little red door back to our hotel and left for the USA.

Patrick: I never let go of the monkey, and here it sits today.

Eddie: Do you guys enjoy telling me these fairy tales?

Patrick and Timothy look at each other and smile.

Timothy: Eddie, how about a candle for our monkey candelabra?

The front door of the Frolic Room opens. Two women in Moroccan clothes enter the bar.

Woman One: Look! Our monkey candelabra!

Woman Two: And those same two flaccid idiots who stole it.
