“If I Loved You”; Carousel 1997 Seattle

5th Avenue Theater, Seattle, Washington

The 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle is gorgeous. It is modeled after the Imperial Throne Room in Beijing. What an experience it was to be there. As usual, it was a rainy winter night in Seattle. My date and I had a quick drink at the bar in the basement and then took our excellent seats about 20 rows back from the stage.

I was 45 and my girlfriend was 26. I was still ambitious in my forties. My girlfriend had no idea what a musical in a fancy theater was like. She almost made us late. I told her that the curtain goes up if we are there or not and once the show starts, you don’t get in. Sheesh!

The audience was elderly. Musicals aren’t as popular as they once were and it was flu season.

I remember the lead singer starting to sing “If I Loved You…” which is a tough song to sing, and right at the beginning of the song, an older gentleman had a coughing fit about ten rows from the stage. I could see that the singer was pissed.

He sang, “IF! I loved you..” as if to say, “IF! I killed you” to the coughing man.
It was a great evening and performance I’ll never forget.
